However, it was officially introduced to the Grand Bahama community last month, with a special product exhibition and contractors' seminar at the facility based on Peel Street. Some 150 persons from the industry attended the function. Henri Ho, President and CEO of Steel HQ Bahamas Ltd., confirmed that full operation of its new Freeport Plant was but weeks away. The company, a subsidiary of China Building Systems Hong Kong, will develop and manufacture pre-engineered cold-rolled steel framing components for the construction industry.
Bodybuilding show spectacularOnly five more days to what is being anticipated to be one of the biggest bodybuilding shows ever in Grand Bahama.The Grand Bahama Bodybuilding, fitness and figure championships are set for this Saturday, June 24 at the Hilton Outten Convention Centre. The competition, which used to be called the Northern Bahamas Bodybuilding championships, is expected to attract more than 30 athletes from Nassau alone. Athletes are also expected in from Abaco and one or two other Family Islands, along with athletes from Grand Bahama. While shows in the past have at some point attracted a large competitive stage, it is believed that this year's competition will attract the largest amount of athletes ever. Why all the hype and interest in this year's competition? Well, three reasons.
Union members in outrageMembers of the Bahamas Electrical Workers Union (BEWU) yesterday gave the management at the Bahamas Electrical Corporation (BEC) a taste of what they have in store for them if they don't "quickly resolve" their industrial issues.About 300 members of the BEWU held a massive "meeting" in front of the BEC's building on Blue Hill Road Wednesday morning, to capitalise on their promise to take serious action against BEC, for its failure to respond to their cries for better working conditions and other industrial disputes. Such gathering had a minimal impact on the supply of electricity services to many paying consumers on the Island of New Providence. Union President Dennis Williams, said the meeting held yesterday morning is just the tip of the iceberg. "This in itself this morning is not industrial action, this is the beginning" said Mr Williams.
Father, child lookalikes exciteBahamas @ Sunrise held its second "Father, Daughter, Son Look-Alike" contest on Friday, June 16, 2006. The morning show, produced by The Counsellors Ltd., attracted ten fathers who brought their children to vie for a myriad of prizes from travel tickets to a day at the spa.Out of the twenty-seven contestants, "Mr. Rake and Scrape"- Mitchell Thurston and his daughter Mitchelle emerged as the overall winners with Lennox Cartwright and his infant daughter Logan right behind them in the second spot. The Beneby threesome consisting of Benson, senior and junior and baby girl Alia took the number three spot. The show aired live at its usual time 6:30 am and entrants for the look-alike contest were present and accounted for at that early hour. For placing first, the Thurstons received two tickets to any destination sponsored by Bahamas Ferries; dinner for two at the British Colonial Hilton, a portrait by Wendell Cleare and a digital camera and CD player from QBC/Radio Shack.
