Travel warning issued for Bahamas after Canadian tourist contracts ...

OTTAWA (CP) - The Public Health Agency of Canada is monitoring an outbreak of malaria in the Bahamas after a Canadian traveller contracted the disease.

The United States has also reported one case in a returning traveller. Both of these cases travelled to Great Exuma. Malaria, a flu-like illness, is most commonly transmitted to humans through the bite of an

infected mosquito and is very rarely transmitted from one person to another.

The agency is recommending Canadians going to Great Exuma use antimalarial medication and insect repellents.

Bahamians Cautious Of Development

Chub Cay, Bahamas (AHN) - Bahamian leaders, who have approved $11.6 billion in foreign investments in the past four years, are, according to a Sun-Sentinel report, driving the most ambitious economic expansion in the nation's history.

There are, however, some concerns about the development plans. "There is some concern that the country is being given away," said Pat Strachan, immediate past president of the Bahamas Real Estate Association, in the Sun-Sentinel report.

A Colorado environmental group, Global Response, claims the Bimini Bay Resort and Casino will destroy mangroves that help protect marine life.

The developers and the government defend their environmental records.

Vincent Peet, the Bahamian minister of financial services and investments, tells the Sun-Sentinel that every approved development project has the blessing of The Bahamas Environment, Science and Technology Commission.

Remembering a Legend

In celebrating the Independence of our Nation, we would like to take the time to sing the praises of one of our MVCs. Lois Marie Wells Symonette was a Most Valuable Citizen of The Bahamas. Over the course of her 43+ years of Government Service, she has made a significant contribution to the evolution of our Public Systems. Through her passion, wisdom, her faith in God and in the human spirit, both publicly and privately, she has impacted the growth and well being of our nation's citizens, some of whom, may not have had a voice to speak out otherwise.

The entire family of Mrs. Symonette extends heartfelt thanks to those who have played a role in her life and her career over the years and most recently have paid respects to her in her passing. Your kind expressions of love, flowers and gifts to the scholarship fund set up in her honor is most appreciated.

Shape of things to come

One of the most far-reaching redevelopments to be conceived in The Bahamas will create thousands of jobs and bring about a dramatic rise in tourism income. The ambitious renaissance plan is expected to involve some $400m, that will completely revitalise downtown Nassau and place it firmly on the world's stage. The master plan, drawn up by Bahamian stakeholders, has been aimed at halting economic decline.

The document makes it clear that there are two parallel tracks of action the government must take in order to initiate the redevelopment of downtown Nassau and the Harbour – both of which are equally important in obtaining real and sustained results. The first track consists of the actual construction im-provements, catalysts projects, and programmes that provide tangible results to convey the message that the downtown area is changing.

Asian Flush: Asians and Alcohol

Its Saturday night. You are meeting friends for dinner at a chic spot in town. You share appetizers, enjoy a delectable exotic entre, and order a glass of wine to complement your meal. The conversation and laughter lingers and is soon followed by another round of drinks for everyone. After dinner, your group continues the night at the cool dance club across town. After gaining passage from the bouncer at the door, everyone heads to the bar to order Jack Daniels on the rocks, Cosmopolitans, Captain Morgan and Coke, and of course, somebody always wants a mixed drink. After several sips, everyone is buzzed and hits the dance floor. After several songs, everyone takes a break from dancing. Your best friend brings two pitchers of beer for the group. Before the pitcher is threequarters empty, someone yells, lets do shots! Soon, small shot glasses filled the tequila, bowls of lime, and salt shakers crowd the table.
