Privatization of eligibility services might be delayed for months

Federal reviews of documents and other factors will delay - possibly for months - the state's plan to outsource the application process for food stamps, Medicaid and other government safety-net programs.

The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration originally hoped to turn over the application process to private vendors with the start of the new state fiscal year this month. Instead, it will wait for the U.S. Department of Agriculture to approve the estimated $1 billion contract, or else it would risk the loss of USDA funding for some of the costs.

That's good news for some critics who have argued FSSA was rushing into the outsourcing plan with little deliberation over how it could affect approximately one in six Indiana residents.

The USDA administers food stamps, which are among the benefits received by those 1 million people.

Harkin's flag burning vote not voice of Iowans

Hornick Iowa -- It sickens me every time they vote on the flag amendment issue and OUR Sen. Harkin seems to vote HIS position and not those of his constituents back home. Only one vote short of being sent down to the states for ratification makes his vote even harder to accept.I don't understand why have offices all over the state for Mr. Harkin to collect opinions and the pulse of Iowans when he doesn't listen to those who sent him there. His vote was NOT the voice of Iowans. -- Ron Kerr

Federer, Bjorkman, Baghdatis in Wimbledon semifinals; Nestor wins ...

LONDON (AP) - The "Ooohs" and "Aaahs" from an appreciative crowd began during warmups, when Roger Federer volleyed one ball through his legs. His artistry grew more impressive once play began for real.

Facing the last man to defeat him on grass, three-time Wimbledon champion Federer quickly turned the Centre Court rematch into a mismatch, beating No. 7-seeded Mario Ancic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday to reach the semifinals.

If the score was routine, Federer's play was anything but. Some shots were so sublime that even the Swiss star was taken aback.

"I definitely had a period where it was so good, it was just incredible," said Federer, bidding to become the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1976 to win Wimbledon without dropping a set. "You're not afraid to try anything, you're not afraid to hit the ball hard, you're not afraid to go for aces.

New machinery to alleviate AG backlog

State-of-the-art technology will now allow law enforcement officials in Grand Bahama to sit in on the Attorney General's Swift Justice meetings.

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Allyson Maynard-Gibson, said at the Swift Justice June update that Commissioner of Police, Paul Farquharson, has given his consent for the Freeport police team to participate in Swift Justice discussions by way of video uplink. Mrs Maynard-Gibson added that this technological connection will serve as yet another effort in the programme, as it moves to fulfil the duties and obligations that it has set out to do.

"We at the Office of the Attorney General welcome this, as it will enable the Freeport team to participate in Swift Justice meetings," she said. "We expect that the outcome will [result in the] more effective use of court time and [a] greater success rate in prosecutions."

The AG added that these steps are critical to enhancing the success of the Swift Justice process and project and will aid them as they also seek to give details to the public, as Bahamians are entitled to understand the process.
