Ex-CEO's boating request opposed

Federal prosecutors say money that should have belonged to investors in the defunct National Century Financial Enterprises was transferred to an account in the Bahamas. The information was disclosed by the government in documents opposing a request by the companys former CEO, Lance K. Poulsen, to be allowed to travel in a 20-foot fishing boat. Poulsen was one of seven former National Century Financial Enterprises executives charged in May with engineering a $3 billion fraud at the Dublinbased company. All seven have pleaded not guilty. A trial date was set last week for Sept. 3, 2007. No hearing date has been set on Poulsens request. National Century provided financing for troubled hospitals, clinics and other health-care providers, buying their accounts receivables at a discount with money raised from investors.

Miami-Dade executives lobby to deepen port

Port of Miami-Dade executives hope their plan to dredge the port's main entrance to 52 feet is one step closer to reality after the U.S. Senate last week earmarked $500,000 for the project.

Though the dredging's total cost is $157 million, port officials believe the Senate's actions show the project is being taken seriously. The port wants a deeper channel to handle the world's largest cargo ships and to complete with other ports, including the Bahamas' Freeport, which is 50 feet.

''This is good news,'' said acting port director Bill Johnson. ``We would have been happy if it would have been $250,000 or $100,000. It's really an eye to the future. It would put us at a competitive advantage.''

The port received in 2005 two cranes designed to load and unload containers from the world's largest cargo ships, known as post-Panamax because they are too big to fit through the Panama Canal.

At The Half: Summer

So we're smack dab into the middle of June and all the signs of summer are with us. Looking backwards to my school years, I can never quite recall being overly fond of the summer months - too hot, too long, too uneventful, too much home and too little school for my tastes. .

Basketball: Argentina earns spot in medal round

As the poster boy of Argentine basketball, Spurs star Manu Ginobili mentors his country's younger players through a regular, sometimes daily, series of e-mails.

Most offer encouragement and advice. The batch leading up to the FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship for Men also contained a request: Don't let me down in my adopted hometown.

With the favored United States watching closely from the stands, Argentina did its hoops role model proud, fighting off a determined Puerto Rico team 79-77 Thursday at Greehey Arena.

"It's an honor to play in the same city as Manu," said point guard Diego Gerbaudo, who had 18 points and nine assists. "We're very appreciative of everything he does for us. He's opened a big door for us in Argentina."

In addition to advancing to the medal round, Argentina (2-0) qualified for the 2007 FIBA U-19 World Championships.

Crook Im A Real Pirate To My Son

MACKENZIE CROOK's three-year-old son JUDE has no idea his dad is an actor - because he is convinced he is a real pirate. The toddler, who visited Crook while he shot PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN in Grand Bahama last year (05), refuses to believe his father also played nerdy GARETH in hit British comedy THE OFFICE. He says, "I don't think my son is even aware of The Office. He thinks I'm a pirate. "He is constantly asking me to role-play and sword-fight. He's been on the set and he's friendly with all the cast." Crook plays humorous pirate RAGETTI in the JOHNNY DEPP-starring movie.
