The battle for City Markets

"The lubricant for the machinery of progress is money." This quote is often attributed to the late Sir Stafford Sands, a former Bahamian Minister of both Tourism and Finance. He was referring, in the 1950s, to the necessity of a properly funded Tourism Promotion Board – the body which was later to become The Ministry of Tourism.

What's special about this quote? Today, almost 39 years after the 1967 elections, and Sir Stafford's sale of City Meat Markets to a foriegn company, Winn Dixie, two new groups of businessmen are squaring off in a battle for control of this company, founded by the late Charles Albury, a member of the Bahamian family that founded and owned Standard Plumbing.

City Meat Markets' early life is simple. Sir Stafford's father, Stafford senior and his grandfather, Sir James, were grocers by trade.

PDVSA taking Bahamas oil tanks back from Petrobras

NEW YORK, June 20 (Reuters) - PDVSA asked Brazilian counterpart Petrobras to remove its oil from a PDVSA-owned oil storage facility in the Bahamas in order to make room for the Venezuelan state oil company's own crude oil, a Petrobras source said Tuesday.

Petrobras (PETR4.SA: Quote, Profile, Research) is currently using tank capacity at PDVSA's BORCO terminal in the Bahamas to store some of its export crudes such as heavy Marlim crude, that it sells on the U.S. Gulf Coast market.

The Borco tank facilities have a crude oil storage capacity of 4 million barrels and storage capacity of 8 million barrels for products.

"We are talking with PDVSA about the (contract termination) notice. We had expected them to take back the tanks sooner or later," the source said, adding that Petrobras would have to leave the facilities eventually.

The first car, a 1941 Ford, rolled into Minden at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday. After that, the cars drove in one by one.

"One of the coolest things rather than seeing the cars is hearing them," said Johnson Lane resident Lyle Ottele.

PLP not 'steering' economy

Senators passed the 2006/07 budget this week, clearing the way for the government's economic agenda to be finally approved by the Governor General.

During his contribution to the debate, Opposition Leader in the Senate, Tommy Turnquest told Senators that since coming to office in May 2002, the Progressive Liberal Party government had done little to "steer" the economy of The Bahamas.

He said the government takes credit for "steering the economy from stagnation to the present situation."

But Mr Turnquest said it was the FNM government - between 1992 and 2002 - that changed the economic outlook of The Bahamas.

He said the PLP inherited an economy that prior to 2001 had grown faster for almost seven years than it had done at any time in recent history.
