Allen predicts PLP winA former FNM cabinet minister said yesterday that Perry Christie's government would walk the next election if it were held over the next four weeks.Algernon Allen, who once represented the Marathon constituency for the Free National Movement (FNM), believes Prime Minister Perry Christie has whipped the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) into shape over the past two years. He also said that Mr Christie had made sure the FNM could not play the economic card in the run-up to the 2007 general election, since the Christie administration had brought in billions of dollars in foreign investment. "Clearly, Mr Christie did not seem, two years ago, to have the controls of the organisation or the controls of the governance of the country at hand... Ask me this question now and I say that Mr Christie is doing a good job now, in terms of ensuring that the governance flows more smoothly and ensuring that the investment that is necessary to generate jobs...is moving," Mr Allen said yesterday on Love 97's Issues of the Day.
Toronto take Bargnani with No. 1 pickThe Toronto Raptors picked Andrea Bargnani as the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft in New York on Wednesday, becoming the first European player and the third international rookie taken first overall in the new century. The 2.13-meter forward has drawn those comparisons to the Dallas Mavericks' All-Star Dirk Nowitzki for his outside shooting skills. Playing last season for Benetton Treviso in Italy, Bargnani shot 37 percent from 3-point range. He followed China's Yao Ming in 2002 and Austrlian Andrew Bogut in 2005 to become the third foreign-born No. 1 pick. "This is the best league in the world," Bargnani said to ESPN. "I'm so proud to represent my country." The 20-year-old was far from a sure draft, but Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo decided he was the best choice in a draft which lacked star power.
Survival Summit hailed a successSir, it is truly a pleasure to be able to return to the pages of your daily as a contributing writer after being away for a while.Today's topic is 'Survival summit, just what our souls needed.' My brothers and sisters in Christ, it was truly a wonderful week after experiencing the most awesome move of God that I have seen in my life here on this earth. For those of you who don't know what I am talking about, I am talking about the Survival Summit held at St. John's Cathedral last week and hosted by Bishop Godfrey Williams. My, my, my, what a revival that was. I must pause to encourage Bishop Williams, his lovely wife Lady Iris Williams, young brother Williams (son), the ushers and all the persons who made that summit the success that it was.
Basketball: Canada escapes upset against BahamasCanada improved to 2-0 in Group A with an unexpectedly difficult 77-70 victory over Bahamas at Greehey Arena.Canada, coming off a 17-point victory over Puerto Rico, trailed for most of the second half against a Bahamas squad that suffered a 40-point beating at the hands of Argentina in its opening game of the FIBA Americas Under-18 Men's Championship. Canada salvaged the victory by scoring the game's final seven points, including Junior Cadougan's runner in traffic for the go-ahead basket with less than a minute remaining. "In a tournament like this, there's no such thing as a bad win," Canada coach Greg Francis said. "There's no team you can sleep on at the international level. A loss would have been tough to rebound from." Devoe Joseph scored 21 points to lead Canada.
