Mike Jervis Turns trash into cash

Mike Jervis is a consummate environmentalist. He is also one who takes pride in preserving our cultural and historical artefacts. And in gathering what is termed 'trash' mainly from the seashore, he was able to turn a hobby into a vocation. Says he: "I've always been fascinated by small Bahamian wooden houses....so I started making replicas as a hobby. Some of my friends saw it, they were impressed ... and that gave me the motivation to continue. I took the first house to the market as an experiment and sold it immediately....so I ventured out in constructing other old Bahamian houses."

That was five years ago and Mike has since developed a part-time vocation that is both therapeutic , and rewarding.

Mike says with pride that among those who encouraged him is renowned Bahamian artist Stan Burnside.

Caribbean: High or low season?

It's the middle of January, and heat-seeking bikini bombshells carpet the beach, bronzing the winter pallor from their pampered flesh. There's a special buzz in the air that grows louder as the beautiful people get amped for another night of seeing and being seen in the A-list spots. You're at ground zero of the Caribbean high season, and you wouldn't have it any other way.

Same beach in mid-July. You decompress on the flawless stretch of white sand, mellowing to the shoosh of the waves. Tonight you'll splurge on dinner, happily blowing some of the money you saved by taking your trip in low season -- and you won't even need a reservation. Tomorrow, it's the summer sales at the boutiques, then a free snorkel excursion. You won't find these kinds of perks in winter. What's not to love?

Two distinct vacations, same great Caribbean getaway.

Desperate Housewife wants to make her co-star a 'cook'

Washington: Desperate Housewives actress Teri Hatcher could not attend her co-star Marcia Cross' marriage last week, and is hence making up for her absence by loading the newlywed with "tons of appliance wedding gifts". Hatcher missed the ceremony as she was away on a tropical holiday, but insists that is making up for it by giving her pal kitchen appliances and personal cooking lessons. She also claims that she's going to Cross, 44, an expert in the art of cooking, so that she is able to rule over her man's heart forever. "Emerson (her daughter) and I weren't able to go to her wedding because we were in the Bahamas. Marcia knew it was a trip we had planned before they picked their wedding date," Contactmusic quoted her, as saying. "So I told her that I was going to show up with tons of appliance wedding gifts and I'm going to teach her how to cook for her husband!" she added.
