MSC Marina is largest cargo ship to dock at Port Everglades

The MSC Marina made local history Friday when the 997-foot-long container ship steamed into Port Everglades as the largest cargo vessel to ever tie up at the facility.

"It's exciting for Port Everglades," port spokeswoman Ellen Kennedy said. "It's a definite indication of our growth."

A high level of intrusion

The comments in The Senate debate of Budget 2006-2007 by Senator Philip Galanis were certainly a blatant intrusion into the private affairs of a private business that is totally supported and mandated by a specific law: The Hawksbill Agreement, 1955.

There is nowhere in this progressive legislation – which established Freeport, the brainchild of Wallace Groves – where Government could determine or create policy. In fact, there has been reversed intrusion where Government has deliberately intruded in the affairs of the Grand Bahama Port Authority. Do we really have to remind ourselves of the Pindling "Bend or Break" speech?

It is ironic and many are questioning why immediately after the recent resignation of the most brilliant Central Banker The Bahamas ever had, Julian Francis, suddenly projects are approved? Is this simply coincidence or was Central Government, especially the Minister of Financial Services and Investments, holding the Port Authority to ransom by holding back on approvals which under Hawksbill basically is supposed to be just a rubber stamp once the Port has completed their due diligence and given approval.

New vision for GBPA

Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) executives met with lawyers, accountants and bankers yesterday to discuss the company's new vision for Freeport.

The GBPA hosted the licensees to a luncheon at the Westin Grand Bahama Island at Our Lucaya Beach and Golf Resort.

Chairman Hannes Babak, at a subsequent meeting, briefed the media on the purpose of the talks, revealing that it was to discuss how the Port Authority can improve and become more transparent.

Babak said determining how the GBPA – the licensing authority of Freeport – can react quicker to requests for licences was also up for discussion.

The move comes weeks after much criticism on the sluggish state of the economy of Grand Bahama.

"Part of the community that was here today represents all the clients, all investors who are investing already in Grand Bahama, in Freeport, but especially all (of the new) investors," said Babak.

Maritime industry heads for choppy waters

THE islands maritime industry could be heading for stormy waters in a blame game over why the Cyprus registry is shrinking and not attracting any new blood to the flag. After years of having a tarnished image as an open registry, last month the Cyprus flag made it to the top echelons of the Paris Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), finally being put on the prestigious white list, signifying a dramatic reduction in detention rates. On top of that, EU membership coupled with hard work by the Shipping Department and those involved in the industry over the past ten years, resulted in a huge number of substandard ships being struck off. Although this meant a substantial drop in the registry, once fourth in the world, it was done in the name of quality. Only the Turkish ban remains as a serious disadvantage.
