DOUBLES MATCH RE-WRITES HISTORY

Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor wrote themselves into the record books on Wednesday by winning the longest match in Wimbledon history.

The pair won a marathon doubles quarter-final clash 23-21 in the final set - the entire match lasting six hours and nine minutes.

The third seeds, from the Bahamas and Canada respectively, eventually beat Simon Aspelin, of Sweden, and Australian Todd Perry 5-7 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 23-21 after their match had been held over from the previous day, starting at just after 1630 BST on Tuesday and finally ending almost 26 hours later.

Knowles and Nestor will now be hoping for a less-taxing encounter when they take on American number one seeds Bob and Mike Bryan for a place in the final.

The previous record had been for a men's singles in 1989 between Greg Holmes and fellow American Todd Witsken which lasted five hours 28 minutes.

End Is Near For Blighted Central Park Village

TAMPA - The unease permeates from the narrow, winding alleyways that serve as streets, pushing drivers into the heart of a maze.

The cinderblock backyard walls hide gardens of poverty - patches of dying grass, strewn with trash. Laundry lines snake across the horizon like dead branches from concrete trees. Young men hang out on front steps, their eyes narrowing when a stranger rolls past.

Central Park Village, one of Tampa's oldest and largest public housing complexes, has earned its reputation as a tough neighborhood.

It is a throwback to the perception of public housing of years past. Only here, it remains a reality.

It wasn't always this way, and soon it will be no more.

The residents, 1,300-plus, are moving, the first wave set to leave early next month.

For the second time around, the Ministry of Tourism is partnering with the Miami Dolphins for the Second Annual Grand Bahama Dol-Fan Fest.

The three-day event is set for June 23 - 25.

Leonard Stuart, who is responsible for Sports Tourism Market in Fort Lauderdale is excited over the chance to bring this event to Grand Bahama for the second time.

"We are happy to have the Miami Dolphins partner with The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism for the Second Annual Dol-Fan Fest," said Stuart.

"We are looking forward for an exciting time and we are calling all the people in the islands of The Bahamas to come out on those days to enjoy the Miami Dolphins, who would be the next Super Bowl champs."

Stuart noted that South Florida is expected to host the next Super Bowl and that is why, "we are in partnership with the Miami Dolphins."

Organizers, added Stuart, have a number of activities on the agenda for the weekend affair.

Metro briefs

Hurricane specialists were keeping an eye on a disorganized low pressure system roughly 200 miles from the Bahamas Saturday. The system, which is about 300 miles across, still had the potential to become a depression, said Lixion Avila, a hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center. But so little had happened with the system Saturday that weather watchers canceled plans for an Air Force plane to go investigate. That plane is supposed to go up today. The National Weather Service predicted a 70 percent chance of rain today for the West Palm Beach area, as well as near Stuart.

JUPITER — Rescuers recovered a dead manatee from the St. Lucie River Saturday. The 10-foot female was found in the river's northwest fork and towed into Burt Reynolds Park by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, spokeswoman Dani Moschella said.
