freeport bahamas shippingBahama Islands News, Articles and InformationIndependence golf tourney setThe Bahamas Chamber of Commerce's 2nd Annual Independence Golf Tournament has attracted more than 100 participants, and the list is still growing. According to BCOC golf committee chairman Khaalis Rolle, "This year's event might be bigger than the last."However, instead of hosting the golf tournament during the Independence weekend the committee had to move the event up to this coming Saturday. It will be a two-man scramble format for the tournament which will be held at the Cable Beach Resorts (Radisson) course. Rolle told the Nasau Guardian that the golf tournament has become one of the chief fund-raising events for the BCOC. "We wanted to find an activity that most of the members of the Chamber could be a part of. Most of the members play golf so it just seemed logical to continue an event like this." On Tuesday, the BCOC golf committee also announced that Diamonds International has come on board as the title sponsor of the tournament.
Flynn is In, AgainPORT ANTONIO -- Errol Flynn's love affair with Port Antonio began in the 1940s while he was on a sailing trip destined for the Galapagos.Back then, a storm blew his boat the "Zaca" off course to Jamaica and soon he discovered the island's northeast treasure. Port Antonio became Flynn's home for many years, and as he wrote in his memoir, "After thirty-seven years of wandering, I had found my Grecian isle."Now, the Marina at Port Antonio has been renamed the Errol Flynn Marina in tribute to the town's most famous resident. "It's amazing that even today Flynn's presence remains an undercurrent in Port Antonio," said William Tatham, Vice President of Cruise and Marina Operations. "The renaming of the Marina is merely an affirmation of what residents and visitors have known for a long time, that his mystique is still very much a part of the fabric of this part of Jamaica."After his initial visit to the island, Flynn would return to Port Antonio and his 2000-acre Errol Flynn Estates on hiatus between films.'True Caribbean Pirates' lands on History ChannelWilling to jump into a pirate adventure lacking Johnny Depp? Consider History Channel's "True Caribbean Pirates," which tells dead man's tales about Blackbeard, Black Bart and other pillagers and plunderers.According to the two-hour program debuting 1 p.m. today, piracy had its roots in the practice of "privateering," in which nations lusting for New World riches used freelance private sailors instead of navies to counter dominant Spain in the Caribbean. The lure of wealth tempted some to cross the line into piracy, but it was peace that really swelled the pirate ranks. With thousands of privateers and sailors out of work, the age of outlaw pirates was under way; even women (Anne Bonny and Mary Read, among them) joined in. Among the more colorful details in the program: Blackbeard intimidated foes by placing burning rope beneath his heat to create a fearsome cloud of smoke; Nassau, Bahamas, became the site of a sort of all-pirate resort; the iconoclastic Black Bart Roberts conducted religious services but hanged an official from a ship yardarm.

Tropical system set to soak South FloridaSouth Florida was forecast to receive a much-needed soaking today and Monday, thanks to a tropical disturbance off the Bahamas. As the disturbance approaches the state, this region could see up to an inch of rain from its fringes, said meteorologist Barry Baxter of the National Weather Service in Miami. "And we definitely need it," he said. The poorly organized disturbance might grow into a tropical depression today and drift slowly toward central or north Florida, forecasters said. On Friday night, it was about 200 miles east of Abaco Island in the Bahamas. It's too early to say whether it might reach tropical storm strength, said hurricane specialist Michelle Mainelli of the National Hurricane Center in Miami-Dade County.
BUT president says teachers are on alertWith negotiations between The Bahamas Union of Teachers (BUT) and the Ministry of Education reaching a stand-off over salaries, the union is apologizing in advance to parents and students for any unforeseeable actions. In that vein, BUT President Ida Poitier-Turnquest says teachers are on alert. And, with just one more day before the end of the 2005/2006 school year, the president explained just what that means. "They are very focused. They are sitting up and paying attention and waiting for the word as to what will come next," she said. Turnquest says their action is necessary and the BUT is confident it has the backing of the public. "The Bahamas Union of Teachers thanks the public, especially the parents and the students for their total support in this matter because our parents know that education is not cheap and it is important and they want the best," she said.
