grand bahama real estateBahama Islands News, Articles and InformationBahamas tries to contain malaria outbreakNASSAU, Bahamas (AP) -- Health authorities tested inmates and guards in an immigration detention center for malaria Friday as the Bahamian government sought to contain an outbreak of the illness on the southern island of Great Exuma.The government decided to conduct the tests at the Carmichael Road Detention Center after realizing that a group of suspected illegal immigrants from Haiti were sent to the jail after they were captured in Great Exuma two days after the discovery of malaria on the island, the Ministry of Health said in a statement issued late Thursday. There have been 16 confirmed cases of malaria on Great Exuma, about 130 miles southwest of Nassau since the first week of June. Bahamian authorities have been screening people in the southern island for malaria and spraying pesticides to control the outbreak.
Classes focus on EnglishIn an attempt to improve English Language pro- grammes in schools, the Department of Education yesterday began a two-day English as a Second Language (ESL) workshop for Grand Bahama's teachers. Over 40 teachers from 11 schools across the island participated in the six-hour development sessions, which took place in the ballroom of the Our Lucaya Resort.Teachers were guided through an all-day session on how to teach four linguistic skills in the same order that natural language and learning occurs. The professional sessions included an upgrade of the English language for teachers in schools that carry a high percentage of non-English speaking students. .The annual Caribbean Tourism Conference to held in BahamasThe Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) and the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism have chosen the Westin and Sheraton Grand Bahama Island Our Lucaya Resort on Grand Bahama Island, The Islands of The Bahamas, as the host hotel for the 29th Annual Caribbean Tourism Conference (CTC-29), taking place Oct. 20-25, 2006. Smith highlights risksNo matter how strong, positive and encouraging the outlook for small economies like The Bahamas, there is always a downside risk, State Minister for Finance James Smith warned yesterday.Mr Smith, who presented the government's proposed 2006/07 budget to Senators, reiterated Prime Minister Perry Christie's positive outlook for the economy but emphasised that small economies have certain built-in vulnerabilities. "Indeed, The International Monetary Fund (IMF) observed in its May 2006 report that 'as a small open economy, with a fixed exchange rate, The Bahamas is exposed to shocks, including hurricanes, increases in oil prices, US slow down or a turnaround in global capital markets," noted Mr Smith. The IMF also pointed out that a key challenge for The Bahamas, is to develop and strengthen monetary and fiscal policies to help the economy weather potential storms.
NRDC Press Archive: Sonar Lawsuit Settlement: Navy Will Limit Needless Harm to WhalesLOS ANGELES (July 7, 2006) - Conservation and animal welfare groups today reached a settlement in a hard-fought lawsuit against the U.S. Navy that will reduce needless harm to whales, dolphins and other marine life caused by high-intensity, mid-frequency sonar used during massive international war games now underway in waters off of Hawaii.The settlement comes four days after the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and other organizations won a restraining order temporarily blocking the use of mid-frequency sonar during the eight-nation Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercises until better safety procedures were in place. In granting the order, the judge agreed the plaintiffs had presented "considerable convincing scientific evidence demonstrating that the Navy's use of MFA sonar can kill, injure, and disturb many marine species, including marine mammals." Gehry as architect and designer for the casino resort they are proposing to build on Singapore's Sentosa island.Gehry, who is best known for the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, will be up against architects appointed by two rival bidders: a tie-up between Genting International PLC (G13.SG) and Universal Studios, and a consortium involving casino resort developer Eighth Wonder and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide (HOT). The Sentosa casino, which will be built on a 49-hectare site, will be Singapore's second after the US$3.6 billion Marina Bay Sands, which is expected to open its doors in 2009.
