'International Flava' comes to Nassau

Hybrid Events is an international company with ties to the US, Jamaica and The Bahamas. Recently, they put on a show at Club Nirvana featuring international DJ's, Black Chiney and "Omen." The event started out slowly but gradually gained momentum and impressed everyone who attended.

Kandice Hanna- the sole Bahamian in the mix of Jamaican, American pottage and a businesswoman in her own right with several companies to her name (including the phenomenal KhanAali Designs, which focuses on public relations, graphic design and lots more) - sat with us for a few minutes and gave us insight into Hybrid's interest in the Bahamian Party Scene.

Weekender: Why did Hybrid choose The Bahamas for this event?

Kandice: This is how it all began... In my junior year of university, I had to take this course, 'Public Relations Campaigns' for my major.

Chappelle, Pee-wee return to tube

Dave Chappelle is finally returning with new episodes of "Chappelle's Show" - well, sort of.

An audience has never seen these episodes, which will premiere 9 p.m. Sunday on Comedy Central. This actually is work that Chappelle completed before walking away from the series nearly two years ago.

Comedy Central says he left enough behind to make up six new episodes. Chappelle has said he doesn't want them to air.

But the cable channel, which drew some of its biggest audiences with "Chappelle's Show," obviously has a different opinion. So these sketches are being dubbed as "lost" episodes.

Chappelle will be seen only in the sketches. "Chappelle" contributors such as Charlie Murphy and Neal Brennan will stand in for Chappelle during the introductions and exits.

The material is telling of Chappelle's state of mind before he left.

Media Alert

Christopher Lee makes a fine villain, sporting a golden gun, a third nipple and a tiny henchman called Nick Nack, who is wittily played by Herve Villechaize. Roger Moore gives his usual suave performance as James Bond, but this is far from the best in the series. May be edited for some language and violence. Directed by: Guy Hamilton Cast: Roger Moore, Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland, Maud Adams Film: "The Spy Who Loved Me" (1977) Channel: AMC (USA) Date: Tuesday 13th June 2006 Time: 22:45 "Nobody Does It Better" than Roger Moore in one of the best post-Connery James Bond films. Well acted, smartly cast and lavishly directed, this spy escapade is far-fetched mayhem of the highest order, with a welcome accent on character realism rather than just spectacular sets. Directed by: Lewis Gilbert Starring: Roger Moore, Barbara Bach, Curt Jurgens, Richard Kiel, Caroline Munro, Walter Gotell Thanks to `Jack Wade` for the alert.

Restless Native: Tom Lappin: Exposed: Dr No’s evil grip on Scots ...

Temporarily putting aside dreams of becoming an independent Scotland’s next head of state (first milkman, anybody?), Sir Sean Connery is casting himself as its celebrity chronicler. Next year will see the publication of a personal history of his homeland, a book somewhat undersold by his agent in The Scotsman as “like sitting round the 75-year-old actor’s dinner table and hearing his anecdotes”.

That image conjures up the frustrations of trying to stop Connery droning on about constitutional iniquities and get him on to the racy stuff about Ursula Andress’s swimsuit.

Education Minister thanks teachers for being professional

With a reported overwhelming number of teachers showing up for National Report Card Day yesterday, despite instructions to do otherwise, Minister of Education Alfred Sears thanked the educators for being the professionals they are.

"I want to thank teachers for being the professionals they are and to commend them for showing the maturity and professionalism that is expected from teachers," he said last evening in an interview with The Freeport News.

In fact, he said the Bahamas Union of Teachers (BUT)'s threat had very little effect on the educational system.

The 3,500 teachers have been put on red alert.

This comes after 12 hours of talks last week Wednesday that went well into the morning on Thursday.

Talks resumed last Friday at 3:00 p.m.

Floodwaters wreak havoc across US capital area

A rare tropical deluge that began Sunday and could continue through midweek unleashed floods that swamped homes and highways, closed several federal buildings in Washington and forced some people to swim for their lives.

Heavy rains caused a landslide in Chesapeake Beach, Md., a mudslide that resulted in the closure of the Capital Beltway and Woodrow Wilson Bridge, the shutdown of most commuter rail lines and power outages at tens of thousands of homes. In Chevy Chase, Md., boat crews rescued about 35 partygoers stranded at the Candy Cane City recreational center on Beach Drive.

The storms slammed downtown Washington, flooding critical commuter routes, such as Constitution Avenue and the 12th Street tunnel, and swamping a pair of heavily used Metro stations. Not even the White House could escape the damage, as a 100-year-old American elm tree fell near the front door.
