New program couples sailing and science

Chewonki's Gulf of Maine Sailing Expedition on the Grand Chat will set sail this summer for the very first time on a journey that combines the best of Maine Coast sailing with scientific monitoring.

The expedition departs on June 28 from Portsmouth, N.H., and will circumnavigate the Gulf of Maine during the sailing season ending in Passamaquoddy Bay in mid-August.

The Chat is a fast, yet stable auxiliary powered sailboat that can carry six guests and two crewmembers for each leg of the expedition. The voyage provides an opportunity to become a "citizen scientist," participating in important monitoring work, fast sailing, and the best of Maine's culinary harvest when the anchor is down.

"Expedition members will get to experience the Gulf of Maine from both a scientific and an adventure perspective," says Peter Arnold, who designed the program for Chewonki.

Musician Profile: Chris & Paul

On a recent Saturday night, the crowd at a local nightspot was a bit thin for 10 o'clock, probably still getting used to daylight-saving time. The band, playing off the crowd's mood, didn't assault patrons' senses right away, instead starting out safe with "Maragaritaville," some Gordon Lightfoot, even some Sachmo with "What A Wonderful World."

But as time passed, it was time to get things rolling and Chris Worth and Paul Stewart, aka Chris & Paul, launched into "Brown-Eyed Girl," a time-tested favorite that soon had people up on the floor.

And once up, they stayed up most of the night as lead singer and frontman Chris worked the crowd, pushing a mic into one woman's hand to coax out a line or two, joking with someone else, always moving around the floor to keep the energy level high.

Ex-CEO's boating request opposed

Federal prosecutors say money that should have belonged to investors in the defunct National Century Financial Enterprises was transferred to an account in the Bahamas. The information was disclosed by the government in documents opposing a request by the companys former CEO, Lance K. Poulsen, to be allowed to travel in a 20-foot fishing boat. Poulsen was one of seven former National Century Financial Enterprises executives charged in May with engineering a $3 billion fraud at the Dublinbased company. All seven have pleaded not guilty. A trial date was set last week for Sept. 3, 2007. No hearing date has been set on Poulsens request. National Century provided financing for troubled hospitals, clinics and other health-care providers, buying their accounts receivables at a discount with money raised from investors.

Sailing across the silver screen

Ahuge turnout is expected for the Friday opening of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest." The sequel to the 2003 blockbuster reunites Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Kiera Knightley. But it is Bradenton native Stephen Ananicz that family and friends will be cheering for when his face graces the screen.

"Everybody's excited," said proud mom Marianne Ananicz. "We're all going to go see it together."

Marianne works at Faces Salon in Bradenton. Her husband, Stephen, is chief operations officer for Chiles Restaurants Group. The couple has three sons: Stephen, 19, Michael,14, and Nicholas, 5.

"We were so proud when Stephen sent us back pictures of him in the pirate outfit," Marianne said. "Nicholas is a little young to understand it all but Michael is very proud of his brother - he's been showing off the pictures to all his friends."

Ananicz landed a part in the supernatural swashbuckling adventure after auditioning in Orlando back in September of 2005.
