Breast cancer support group installs officers

Sister, Sister Breast Cancer Support Group installed its newest officers Sunday with the creation of its Grand Bahama Chapter during a survivors and installation luncheon.

Some 150 cancer survivors, their families and those committed to become trained to support victims of cancer savoured a heart-warming afternoon filled with laughter, knowledge and a few tears.

The message of survival was underscored from a skit by Actor Patrice Johnson on the importance of getting a mammogram, to the playful, yet sobering testimony of survivor and entertainer Dr. Doris Sears, "Rainbow the Christian Clown," to the powerful liturgical dance by Minister Vicki Smith.

The new chapter was established in April and the official installation was held at the Westin Grand Bahama Island at Our Lucaya Beach and Golf Resort.

Rolle wants security plan implemented

The mandate of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) should be revisited. This was the final charge from Commodore Davy Rolle, as he officially retired from his post after 27 years and six months of service. The leadership baton was passed to Lt. Commander Clifford Scavella during an historic change of command ceremony at the Coral Harbour base on Thursday.

Before vacating his post, Commodore Rolle expressed his major concerns and challenges of the RBDF, and encouraged government officials, including Prime Minister Perry Christie and Minister of National Security Cynthia Pratt, to move forward with its proposal to develop a national security plan for The Bahamas. "Such a Plan would focus not only on narcotics trafficking, illegal migration, poaching, environmental disasters and terrorism, but [should be] inclusive of deliberate joint law enforcement coordination and activities, with central data bases and intelligence," Commodore Rolle said.

God Bless the Grand Bahama Port Authority

I am truly pleased that the Honourary Chairman of The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Sir Jack Hayward, has broken his silence on matters related to the ownership of that company. I can only imagine the uncertainty that staff members at the Port must have been experiencing before Sir Jack's statement.

His expressed intent to continue developing Grand Bahama and his confidence in Hannes Babak will go a long way to stop the perception of any dark cloud hanging over our island.

It is my hope that those who have so aggressively tried to exploit the death of a great man like Edward St. George will now pay greater attention to the island where they reside and leave those of us here in Freeport to continue to take on our challenges as we have so strongly over the past 50 years.
