Bahamas. Atlantis Marina receives Blue Flag certification award

Atlantis Marina at the Atlantis, Paradise Island resort in The Bahamas has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag marina certification by the international, independent organization, the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). The Blue Flag signifies that stringent water quality, safety and environmental management and education programs have been established by the resort. The Blue Flag is an exclusive eco-label awarded to over 3,100 beaches and marinas in 36 countries across Europe, Africa and the Caribbean each year. The Atlantis Marina was the only marina in The Bahamas to meet the 22 criteria necessary to receive the Blue Flag honor in 2006. Marinas and beaches participating in this voluntary program work with FEE to ensure the sustainable development of beaches and marinas around the globe.

Records document priest's high-rolling lifestyle

DELRAY BEACH — The Rev. Francis Guinan took his girlfriend to Las Vegas nearly a dozen times, often staying at the Monte Carlo Resort Hotel & Casino where he would receive special room rates because he was a "high roller," documents show.

They traveled together quite a bit - relaxing at a spa in Athens, Ga., taking her son to Ireland and staying at the swanky Atlantis Hotel in the Bahamas in November 2004 with the Rev. John Skehan, his cohort who already has been charged with stealing more than $100,000 from the church both led.

A Player's Dream Vacation

What is your dream vacation spot? For R News photojournalist Bob Gosney it's the Emerald Isle ..Ireland. In this week's Bills Journal Bob posed that very question to the players.

"My dream vaction would probably be somewhere in the Carribean Islands. Seven days of straight golf and eating good," linebacker Angelo Crowell said.

"They've got a resort in the Bahamas called Atlantis. I would like to go to New Zealand but I would have to, my wife would not get on a flight for that long. That's a long flight so I don't think we would do that but she would do the Bahamas and Atlantis," explained backup quarterback Kelly Holcomb.

"My dream vacation would be go to Italy because that's where my family is from. That's where my grandparents are from. I'd love to see where they grew up and I'd love to see all the history behind the city where they grew up Cassino Italy," linebacker John DiGiorgio said.

CARIBBEAN-HAWAII SPECIAL SECTION: Your place in paradise

NASSAU, Bahamas -- The online vacation rental advertisement looks like a fabulous find. For $350 a night, it's a two-bedroom villa at the upscale Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island along the powdery sand of Cabbage Beach. But when you look more closely, it's a lie.

"Easy walking distance of Atlantis," the small print more truthfully says. "Easy walking distance to Cabbage Beach."

Yeah, right. Bring your hiking shoes.

Meanwhile, at Guanahani Village on Cable Beach west of Nassau, three-bedroom ocean-view condos rent for $306 per night in high season for two people (each additional person $20 more.) What you don't see on the Web site, however, is that the 35-unit oceanfront timeshare property has just been sold to a private Bahamian group and is undergoing an upgrade.
