Couples Go on `procreation Vacations'

MIAMI - When Lucinda Hughes heard she would have to drink sea moss elixir while vacationing in the Bahamas, she was certain it would make her sick. Sure enough, three months later, Hughes is very sick - every morning - and expecting her first baby in April. She got pregnant after she and her husband went on a three-day Procreation Vacation at a resort on Grand Bahama Island.

It's part of a trend in which hotels around the world are luring couples who are trying to have a baby. Resorts are offering on-site sex doctors, romantic advice and exotic food and drink calculated to put lovers in the mood and hasten the pitter-patter of little feet.

Even some obstetricians are promoting the trend. Dr. Jason James of Miami said he often encourages couples trying to have a baby to sneak away for a few days, and he often sees it work.

'That's Chicago' set to shake up Regency Theatre stage

MUSICAL PRODUCTION – The Freeport Players' Guild production of "That's Chicago" opens Thursday, November 9, at 8:00 p.m. at the Regency Theatre in Freeport. The musical production runs for two weeks.

The Regency Theatre is about to shake and shimmy to the sounds of jazz and the dance performances of an excited and talented group of actors, dancers, musicians and singers as the Freeport Players' Guild presents its original production of "That's Chicago."

The story is based on the real-life 1920s drama set in prohibition-era Chicago, and centres on the murder accused jazz performer Zelma Holly, played by Joanna Llambias, and the star-struck slayer Foxie Lane, performed by Grand Bahama native Olivia Dorsett. It follows their tale from adultery to murder, to their trial surrounded by a media frenzy that propels both Zelma and Foxie to scramble for notoriety and fame at almost any cost.

Nail-biting contest

Anticipating the outcome of the nail-biting contest, Ministry of Education officials — Language Arts Officer Daphne Barr, Freeport District Superinten-dent Sandra Edgecombe and Assistant Director of Education Damaris Thompson — teetered on the edge of their seats with suspense.

Fifth grader Toni Reckley rounded off the top three after being knocked out in round 17. All three ladies received gifts, certificates and trophies, but only Karamo won the honour to represent her school in Grand Bahama District competition.

The competition for the Grand Bahama District, which includes Grand Bahama, Bimini and the Cays, is scheduled for January 31, 2007. It previously was held at the end of February, but following some significant changes to the 2007 Scripps Spelling Bee competition in Washington D.C., the district date was pushed up to give students more time to prepare for that competition.
