China is still a MOT target

The Ministry of Tourism will continue to focus on mainland Chinese travelers although any benefits to the local tourism industry is expected to be felt over the long-term.

"We realized that China is becoming a major economic powerhouse and decided to actively pursue the promotion of our many tourist attractions," said MOT's deputy director-general Ellison "Tommy" Thompson. Thompson, who was quoted in a Chinese daily, also said easy access between The Bahama Islands and unique tourist attractions should help to attract visitors from China.

Thompson also pointed out how successful trade relations with China, but particularly Beijing, has opened the door to access that market, noting that The Bahamas was given approved destination status in February 2005, which made it easier for Chinese travelers to come to The Bahamas.

Smith treated for pneumonia in same hospital where her son died

NASSAU, Bahamas -- Anna Nicole Smith has been hospitalized with pneumonia at the same medical center where her 20-year-old son died under mysterious circumstances in September, an attorney for the reality TV star said Tuesday.

Smith, whose son died while visiting her in the hospital three days after she gave birth to daughter Dannielynn Hope Marshall Stern, was being treated at Doctors Hospital in Nassau, attorney Wayne Munroe said.

"She has a slight case of pneumonia," Munroe told The Associated Press. "We've had a sudden change of weather here due to a cold snap."

The attorney said the hospitalization was most likely just a precaution since Smith, 38, had recently given birth.

"I didn't gather it was anything serious," he said.

Munroe said Smith, who moved to the Bahamas during her pregnancy, has filed a lawsuit as part of a dispute with a South Carolina developer over the ownership of a waterfront mansion where she has been secluded since her son's death.

Cruise lands at Italy airport

ROME -- Tom Cruise flew into a Rome airport on a private jet, airport officials said, setting off a frenzy among media and fans anticipating the star's high-profile wedding to Katie Holmes.

Cruise arrived at Rome's small Ciampino airport from Los Angeles yesterday with about 10 people, including his mother and his three children, airport officials said.

The 44-year-old actor and Holmes, 27, are set to marry at an undisclosed Italian location Saturday. Speculation on the location has focused on Odescalchi Castle on Lake Bracciano, near the capital. The romantic, 15th-century castle, with its halls and gardens, can host up to 1,400 guests.

MALAWI RULING NEXT WEEK

LILONGWE, Malawi -- Malawi's High Court said it will rule next week on whether a coalition of human rights and child advocacy groups should help decide whether Madonna is fit to adopt a 13-month-old boy.

Cinematical's SmartGossip: Naughty But Sadly Clooney-Free

Sometimes celebrity news stories drag on for weeks or even months. Madonna is still fielding criticism for her decision to adopt an African child whose father is still around, Anna Nicole Smith is still in the Bahamas, currently recuperating from pneumonia, and Snoop Dogg did in fact get charged with possessing a deadly weapon. Meanwhile, I am scrabbling around to find stories about Johnny Depp or George Clooney, preferably with lots of flattering photos, but the actors appear to be reclusive this week. (George, what about your promise?) It's an unfair world.I am consoling myself with this week's gossip, which at least does seem to focus on the naughty, although not with the movie stars I ideally would like to hear make such admissions. More admirable than naughty: Neil Patrick Harris has outed himself and is apparently quite pleased with it.

CARIBBEAN-HAWAII SPECIAL SECTION: Your place in paradise

NASSAU, Bahamas -- The online vacation rental advertisement looks like a fabulous find. For $350 a night, it's a two-bedroom villa at the upscale Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island along the powdery sand of Cabbage Beach. But when you look more closely, it's a lie.

"Easy walking distance of Atlantis," the small print more truthfully says. "Easy walking distance to Cabbage Beach."

Yeah, right. Bring your hiking shoes.

Meanwhile, at Guanahani Village on Cable Beach west of Nassau, three-bedroom ocean-view condos rent for $306 per night in high season for two people (each additional person $20 more.) What you don't see on the Web site, however, is that the 35-unit oceanfront timeshare property has just been sold to a private Bahamian group and is undergoing an upgrade.
