Health news briefsThe American Medical Association has stepped into the controversy over alternative hormone treatments for aging that Suzanne Somers advocates in a new book. The nation's largest doctors' group voted this week to seek stricter Food and Drug Administration oversight and regulation of these so-called "bioidentical" hormone compounds. Some of the treatments are promoted as alternatives to estrogen and progestin supplements once widely used for hot flashes and other menopause symptoms. Somers' new book, Ageless: The Naked Truth About Bioidentical Hormones on national best-seller lists, maintains that these treatments also can reverse the aging process and keep people mentally sharp, physically fit and sexually active. A bit of dark chocolate could avert heart attack Even small amounts of dark chocolate might help to prevent the sort of blood clots that cause heart attacks and strokes, a finding that researchers say could make the treat a routine part of a heart-healthy diet. Changing of the GuardHis career path would take several rapid twists and turns. After graduating from the Governor's harbour All-Age School in 1975 Clifford Scavella headed for Nassau and The Bahamas Hotel Training College. His first career, or so he thought, was to be a hotel manager. But after a short period at the Hotel Training College he was convinced to switch across the street to the College of The Bahamas where the government was offering a stipend for students who would train to be teachers. So out goes the hotel career. Scavella now embarked upon a teachingcareer, or so he thought. Shy of one year in the teaching programme, he applied to become a police recruit and followed through with the six months training at the Police College. He found this attractive because it provided him room and board.
Electricity bills to rise this monthConsumers can expect to shell out more money for their electricity bills this month as the fuel surcharge has once again gone up.Statistics from the Bahamas Electricity Corporation (BEC) have signaled a 0.7224 cent increase in the fuel surcharge over last year's figures for the same period, despite the recent drop in international oil prices. In November 2005, the fuel surcharge was pegged at 11.4746 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh), while the November 2006 fuel surcharge figure stands at 12.1970 cents. However, BEC officials do expect surcharge rates to drop in the coming months. The electricity bill is made up of the basic rate, which is constant and has not changed since October 2003. The fuel surcharge is based on the price of petroleum in the international market and is calculated monthly, using a fixed formula.
