PEOPLE: Winfrey sings the praise of Madonna on adoption

An emotional and occasionally teary-eyed Madonna said in a TV chat with Oprah Winfrey on Wednesday that the 13-month-old boy she's in the process of adopting from the African country of Malawi is healthy and thriving in her London home.

No doubt he'll be shooting quail and nibbling on crumpets before we know it.

But a clearly agitated Madonna also complained that the media had turned the process into a circus of controversy and finger-pointing.

"I'm disappointed because more than anything it discourages other people from doing the same thing," she said. "I feel the media is doing a great disservice to all the orphans of Africa, period, not just the orphans of Malawi."

She's been accused of using her wealth and fame to skate around Malawi's adoption laws to win a speedy interim adoption of David Banda.

Indira Rivera waved good-bye to regular vacations when she became a fashion consultant for Vera Wang. She now spends six days a week wrangling bridal parties, smoothing in-laws spats, and coordinating flowers to match veils to match dresses to match body types. Having recently shot out of bed at 2 A.M. with thoughts of the perfect shoes for So-and-so, Rivera realized it was timepast timefor a break: Im too devoted to my clients; I give up lunch breaks, come in early, stay late. I need to go away. To get a massage. To take a nap. I dont want shoes on. I dont want clothes on. I want a straw hat, and warm weather. Thats all I want.

Prisoners show off skills

Inmates at Her Majesty's Prison had a chance to show a less destructive side of themselves in an exhibition to celebrate the jail's 314th Anniversary.

The exhibition showcased works of art and various craft items done by the prisoners. Photographs of old Bahamian prisons, criminal records dating back to the 1800's and excerpts from writings that highlighted prison life were also on display.

Commenting on the exhibition, Superintendent of prisons Dr. Elliston Rahming said that there is a gross misconception in The Bahamas that prisoners are only sitting around in prisons and doing nothing.

He said that for years inmates have been engaged in productive enterprises in prison. He said that the exhibition was a way for the prison authorities to demonstrate in the grandest, most public fashion possible that there is tremendous talent in the prison on the part of both staff and inmates and when they collaborate their efforts they can produce some wonderful things.

Aquapure pays $65,000

Ten former workers at Aquapure Water Limited won their years-long battle with the company yesterday as the water depot was forced to shell out over $65,000 in damages .

The visibly happy workers filed into the House of Labor building on Friday to collect their checks and put the financial war behind them. Founder, Chief Advisor and Negotiator for the Bahamas Beverage and Water Distributors Union (BBWDU) Huedely Moss said that for too long the ex-Aquapure salesmen have had to suffer financial stress after they were wrongfully dismissed from the company back in 2005.

"This was not acceptable to the workers and the union," he said. "The Trade Union Congress has never lost a case because we know it cannot be right for employers to wrongfully dismiss employees and that was proven here today."

Mr Moss said that the workers' dismissal was wrong simply because the company erroneously classified their termination as summary dismissals, but could not prove that they were in breach of any company rule such as theft, fraudulent offenses, or incompetence.
