Living the Faith

Now 80 and definitely improved with age, in the annals of Bahamian church history, she's still relatively young.

With Catholicism already established in the north with the laying of the cornerstone of St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in August 1885, followed by Sacred Heart Parish in the east, in November 1926, Our Lady's, or more formally, Our Lady of the Holy Souls Parish and Faith Community, brought the denomination into the deep south of the City of Nassau.

In her book, 'Exploring Religious Studies in Bahamian Junior High Schools', Vernetta Capron-Ferguson notes that, "The Roman Catholic's presence in The Bahamas may have started as early as 1492," with the arrival of the Catholic navigator Christopher Columbus.

However, because of political and territorial realities among the various Imperial powers, the church's presence in The Bahamas lagged some 200 years behind its Protestant "off-shoots", namely the three major streams - Lutheran, Calvinist and Anglican - that followed the 16th century Reformation.

NASSAU, Bahamas A businessman involved in a property dispute with Texan Anna Nicole Smith today said he wants her evicted.

The reality T-V star has been in seclusion at a mansion in the Bahamas since the September death of her 20-year-old son, David, just days after she bore a daughter.

South Carolina developer Ben Thompson says he's a former boyfriend of Smith, they met about 18 months ago and had a "short relationship."

Thompson told reporters in Nassau that he loaned Smith money to buy the house for nearly one (M) million dollars. Thompson says Smith failed to make mortgage payments.

He said they remained friendly until the house dispute.

Thompson also says Smith told him that he's the father of baby Dannielynn, but the developer says he's certain that's not true.

Bahamas eager for Round 2

NASSAU, Bahamas – The Bahamas men's national team is eagerly looking forward to the second round of the Digicel Caribbean Cup in Barbados.

The Bahamians tackle the hosts in the opening match on November 19, followed by matches against Bermuda and St Vincent and the Grenadines in the next round.

"We've really started to make waves in the Caribbean now, and people are seeing us as a developing and up-and-coming nation in football," Bahamas technical director Gary Whyte said.

"We have gotten better. We've had teams qualify in the past, but the one great thing about this team is that the players have come right through our system."

Preparations have been ongoing since the side returned from first-round play in Cuba earlier in September.
