Chinese delegation makes historic visit

An influential group of visitors made history recently as the first Chinese tourist group welcomed to The Bahamas since The Bahamas received the strictly regulated Approved Destination Status from the Chinese Government in February, 2005.

The group of 10 included three of China's top tour operators and writers for some of the highest-circulated publications, including Golf Magazine and Cosmopolitan (China) Magazine. As guests of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, the Chinese delegation travelled to three major islands to become familiar with the country's tourism product.

Vernice Walkine, director general of Tourism, welcomed the group on their June 2 – 11 visit, encouraging them to share their Bahamas experiences with their readers and clients.

"The Bahamas has much to offer, and we will fit in as many of those offerings as possible during your stay," Ms.

Sonia Brown & the Brown Entertainment Arts programme

Sonia Brown's company, "Brown Entertainment Group," exists to help others discover, develop and maximise their God given talents, abilities and purpose, so says the company's Mission Statement.

The company was unofficially started three years ago and officially started this year by Ms Brown, a twenty-six-year-old entrepreneur, whose involvement in numerous talent events which entailed modelling, singing and participation in various competitions, from the time she was five, has fully equipped her to counsel others on the entertainment industry and modelling in general. "At the age of seventeen I began modeling for Shane Rollea's House of Infinity. The battle for City Markets

"The lubricant for the machinery of progress is money." This quote is often attributed to the late Sir Stafford Sands, a former Bahamian Minister of both Tourism and Finance. He was referring, in the 1950s, to the necessity of a properly funded Tourism Promotion Board – the body which was later to become The Ministry of Tourism.

What's special about this quote? Today, almost 39 years after the 1967 elections, and Sir Stafford's sale of City Meat Markets to a foriegn company, Winn Dixie, two new groups of businessmen are squaring off in a battle for control of this company, founded by the late Charles Albury, a member of the Bahamian family that founded and owned Standard Plumbing.

City Meat Markets' early life is simple. Sir Stafford's father, Stafford senior and his grandfather, Sir James, were grocers by trade.

FLORIDA BUSINESS BRIEFS: Winn-Dixie plans to leave bankruptcy in fall

Winn-Dixie Stores (WNDXQ.PK) will file its reorganization plan later this month and emerge from bankruptcy by late October after the supermarket chain agreed with creditors on how they will be paid, a company attorney said Thursday.

Winn-Dixie attorney Stephen Busey told U.S. District Bankruptcy Judge Jerry Funk that a committee of creditors had reached a compromise on payments and the Jacksonville-based company agreed.

The agreement has been a major stumbling block for the chain to emerge from bankruptcy. Winn-Dixie filed for reorganization in February 2005.

The agreement will be placed in its reorganization plan, allowing the company to file it by a June 29 deadline, Busey said.

When it emerges from bankruptcy, Winn-Dixie will be a much smaller company.

'YMCA receives generous donation for summer camp

Pleasantries were ex-changed yesterday when YMCA Executive Director Karon Pinder-Johnson received a cheque donated by Major's Golf School and Peter Sprogis to allow some unfortunate students throughout the community of Grand Bahama a chance to attend the "Y" six week summer camp.

"Major's Golf School and Mr. Sprogis felt it was necessary to assist the unfortunate kids who were not able to afford golf," Pinder-Johnson said. "Golf is not a poor man's sport so they made a generous donation of $5,000 towards the golf programme."

As a result, Pinder-Johnson said kids who normally hang around the golf area will now be a part of the summer camp which will enhance their golf skills.

Owner of Majors Golf School and Golf Trainer for the YMCA, Percy Major, said that both he and Sprogis feel proud to be lending a helping hand to the "Y" and was glad to give back to society.

Millions to be spent on Lynden Pindling International Airport

The Perry Christie administration will pump millions into the newly renamed Lynden Pindling International Airport to make it into a world-class terminal.

" Very shortly a world- renowned international airport firm will assume the day to day management of this facility, heralding the redevelopment and revitalisation of this facility into a premiere, world-class airport.
